    The Garden of Earthly Delight

I thought it was solid – it turned out to be a bust,
I thought it saved my life – it was too much of a fuss,
And I’m trying to keep this feeling down.
I thought it was clean – but I was dissing with a sus,
I thought it was cream – but I got a lip full of crust,
And I'm trying to spit this poison out.

    All these things
All these things (I look around see all these things)
In the garden of earthly delight.

I thought it was heaven – it was a silvered purse,
I thought they were holy – but they were just a curse,
And I'm trying to reconcile my mind.
I thought it was love – it turned out to be lust,
I thought it was blood – it turned out to be rust,
And I'm trying to keep this demon down.

    All these things
All these things (I look around see all these things)
In the garden of earthly delight.

I had ideas and dreams – they were only brain mush,
I thirsted for ice – in my mouth only slush,
    And sadness intertwined my heart.
I had everything this rotten world could offer me,
I gave up so much that I thought I’d always bleed,
And then my mind started to realize.

    All these things
All these things (I look around see all these things)
In the garden of earthly delight.

    About How Deep

Me—I fell inside her fortress walls,
My heart smitten in those hallowed halls.
And as my eyes mist, my brain numb,
    and what do you know?

(She says): now, it’s time for me to go.

We fought wars with words raged silently,
She begged won’t you just go quietly.
And as my heart breaks, my breath short,
    and what do you know?

(She says): Why, the truth is what I know.

    She stood silent dripping sympathy,
No, she couldn’t affect some empathy.
And as the knife twists, my back hurts,
    and what do you know?

(She says): that’s— about how deep it goes.

Why, she won’t tell me (why)
    She says, that’s something
    Look at me now

    She Walks

    Seems my days spent dying,
    low murmurs to a prayer.
    Hours mourning hidden grief
and a touch that isn't there.

    Nights I’d wonder aimless,
    lonesome thoughts trackless sand.
    Casual moments could be spoken
raise your memory from the land.

In dreams I find you staring at
    crystal clear blue skies.
    Sandy beaches, honeyed moon
    Wonder filled your eyes.
    Tears… dapple cross my face,
    Awakened by sun’s rise.

The last time I felt your voice
    a gathering of old friends.
Searched the crowd longed for your face
found talking heads that just pretend.

    The hours of rehearsing
for that moment’s sweet soft words.
    A trickle swells to rapids
nouns swept aside by anxious verbs.

In dreams I find you staring at
    crystal clear blue skies.
    Sandy beaches, honeyed moon
    Wonder filled your eyes.
    Tears… dapple cross my face,
    Awakened by sun’s rise.

A drive by night my refuge
    and weariness the long day.
    Forgotten name of our street
but my heart still knows the way.

Our last kiss was a cipher
eternal promise of not yet soon.
A thousand pictures ten thousand words
    many mansions, many rooms.

    Failing Joshua

You’ve been waiting on a lifetime with your hand to the plow
Aren’t these droughts meant to end someday and somehow?
You know a little more than nothing about somethings and everything else
While all your life eludes you and leaves you doubting yourself

Preaching against all those demons in the noonday sun
Worn outward pride, dying inside, you think you’re the only one
You quit the war so long ago and now you do the devil’s work
Cut down with your crown on, hubris made you into a jerk

(But) When you stumble in the darkness
Bring a weary flame and I’ll bring mine
We’ll feast on the world together, rekindle that fire
So can you meet me?  Can you meet me?

You and resignation sat face to face just like young lovers do
But it’s a staring contest that you simply can’t afford to lose.
This famine, all your mammon, left you skin and bones
Craving a slow meal with some friends, but you fast alone.

(But) When you stumble in the darkness
Bring a weary flame and I’ll bring mine
We’ll feast on the world together, rekindle that fire
So can you meet me?  Can you meet me?

You kept the martyr alive, fed the hollow inside, nowhere to hide & no room (at the inn)
But you furnished a plot so precise, a cozy little tomb (Is that a sin?)
All your causes caused no pauses before you peaced out
Man, you've forgotten who you were, who you are, what you’re all about

(But) When you stumble in the darkness
Bring a weary flame and I’ll bring mine
We’ll feast on the world together, rekindle that fire…

If you sink into the darkness
Bring a weary flame and I’ll bring mine
We’ll feast in the world together, rekindle that fire
So can you meet me?  Can you meet me?
Can you meet me? Can you meet me?
    Can you?

    Nineveh

Does a sign portend a curse?
Does the whale contain the man?
Does your candle hold the flame?
Does a minute keep us forever?
Or does a calendar hold our days?

Does the word contain the sound?
Can our lives be more than this?
Does a day hold out our end?
Does the night hide our sin?
Or does God hold back the wall?

    In us all
    In me
    In you
    In us all
    I feel a time begin
    With the thought
    Oh

Does the game contain the prize?
Do you have it in your hand?
You have seen the awesome sight.
Draw a force from the jaws of night.
God is, and was, and is separate.

    In us all
    In me
    In you
    In us all
    I feel a time begin
    With the thought
    Oh

And oh my son (oh my son)
Though I send you, send me (though I send)
I shall, yes, I shall be with you (send me)
Can you can you (I shall be)
rejoice; oh God let me rejoice (yes, with you)
For God holds you -- from your mouth
    He shall burst forth (exuberant)
And He will conquer, He will transcend our failure
