Great Orphan Sea combines the talents of three lifelong friends: Jeff Pinson, Joel Pinson, and Chris Blair, creating music that spans multiple genres, styles and arrangements including prog, rock, pop, Americana and experimental.
Jeff Pinson – Keyboards, Vocals
First and foremost a synthesist at heart, Jeff brings to Great Orphan Sea's music a background in contemporary and traditional keyboards, classical choral music and theory, and a love for progressive rock and pop. All through a collection of classic and modern synthesizers.
Influences: Rush, Yes, Asia, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Alan Parsons, Pink Floyd, 20th century short choral, Boschian landscapes, dreamlike respites.
Desert Island Instruments: Memorymoog Plus, Prophet VS, PPG Wave, Oberheim OB-X.
Joel Pinson – Guitars, Vocals
A restless, sonic tinkerer, Joel is constantly modding his electric guitars to discover new sounds. While he has a long-standing love affair with stringed instruments, he also is fascinated with songcraft and how songs get born – that elusive turn of phrase, a melody you can’t shake or some new sound that stops you in your tracks.
Influences: Strong black coffee, The Beatles, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Charlie Sexton, Elvis Costello, Over the Rhine, Radiohead, Schoenberg, Pärt, Tavener and a slough of early Prog bands.
Desert Island Instruments: PRS Fiore, Saito S-622CS, Yamaha SA1000 and big iron NMV Hiwatt, Ampeg and Fender amps. And a modeler in case all else fails.
Chris Blair – Bass, Vocals
Chris’ key consideration for Great Orphan Sea songs is a clean, supportive bassline. Conception leads to function, and form. And then, upon occasion, some playful ornamentation. The instruments serve as the conduit for translating inner creativity into music and lyrics. All this in gentle adherence to Igor Stravinsky’s wise words: “You ‘respect’, but I love.”
Influences: ELO, Pink Floyd, Enya, New Order, Dreams So Real, Cocteau Twins, The Ocean Blue, Love & Rockets, The Hollies, The Beach Boys, Jean-Michel Jarre, Stu Hamm, T.S. Eliot, soundtrack music, Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.
Desert Island Instruments: Fender Jazz Bass, Tech21 SansAmps, Kawai PH-50, several sturdy notebooks with pen & pencil.
